Globe Trotters!

Tim's socks are finished - unfortunately the foot is too tight (humm - my tension square for the rib compared to the stocking stitch is completely out. So, they will be keeping my feet warm next winter, not my first choice in colour, but in all reality who is going to see them under long pants and inside boots anyway?

Oh, I best introduce myself.

My name is Kylie (mumsbusycrafting on Rav) and I blog here. These are my first pair of adult socks - the first were a pair of Yarn mag Baby Socks. I would like to learn more about sock knitting and learn lots of skills - I am planning on having a pair on the go in a little bag that can be picked up and taken with me for spare moment occasions.

I am late to the Sock Party, but I suddenly realised I had a sock to share!! I don't know that I have any particular aims for the SSS, but I would like to knit myself four pairs of socks to replace the ones that have worn out in the last few months. I think I would also like to make them all my own patterns.



The first pair have been inspired by my handbag and I wrote about it here.



I have finished one and started the other. I have promised to write out the pattern, so as soon as I have finished knitting them, I'll do that!!!

second sock

Ta-da! second sock of many colours done and dusted. Well ends woven in etc. I had waiting time yesterday so made use of it. On the station, on the train and some considerable time at the hearing aid place getting one of my hearing aids attended to.

I've just woven in the ends. I waited till morning as last night I could not see to thread the needle. So not only hearing aids but perhaps glasses need attending to as well? The joys of physical aging!

These were a quick little unintended knit. I'll just add them to Finn's Christmas pile. Now I'll have to think about his cousins again. Made one pair a few weeks ago for the youngest cousin but there are two others. Can't have the DILs being jealous, can I? And there is his big sister too who has chubby feet even though she's only seven. I called in at Tapestry Craft yesterday after I could hear again, and bought some pink Jigsaw. I already have some pink Opal upstairs, so will need to get going on little girly socks.

You'll have to take my word for it that there really are two socks done in this pair. The photo showing the pair on my feet was so blurry I deleted it. No idea what I did to get that result. The cuff looks foreshortened. That's the angle I took the photo from, looking down from above. It's quite a reasonable length, really. If my grandchildren had seen me taking the photo, I'd have been in trouble. "Chairs are for sitting on, grandma, not tables." It was after 5:00pm when I took this and it was about to pour, so light was not good. I sat on the table on the deck to get myself up where there was a bit more light.

They are very combubble as Miss Three said a couple of weeks ago about the socks I made her. The fit is good, there is a lot of stretch in the easy, mock cable pattern. The wool was part of my Elann Essential stash, bought on special quite a while ago now.

Here comes a confession. These have actually helped purge Second Sock Syndrome for that wool. It's not something I normally suffer from, but about two years ago I did a Nancy Bush vintage sock from a free web pattern. I really like the result, but have never done the second sock. I suppose I could turn the pattern up again with a bit of searching, but have lost my copy. As I now don't have enough wool to do it, I can frog that first one and make more small socks for charity or grandkids. With the bit I have left and all of a sock with a long leg, I'll have plenty for that.

I'm not sure what I'll do next. I know I spoke about circulars. i still haven't bought another small circ. and I really like my dpns. It may never happen.

One finished sock for probably the present basket and one pair for the youngest grandchild. He's not long turned two, but already has a bigger foot than his three year old cousin. I've made this pair very big, but he'll grow. They are intended for next winter, so hopefully they will still fit then. I've now quite an accumulation of browns, bones etc and some green as well. I can see a stripey pair for little Finn on the list of projects. A good way to use up what I have. Only one problem, weaving in ends. YUK!

The other single sock is called "Ashes" and I found the pattern in the list at Knitting Pattern Central. It's a ridiculously easy pattern to do and the fabric pulls in nicely to be snug but will easily stretch to a much larger size. In fact, the rib pulls in so snugly that the rest of the foot looks enormous after it. I cast on for the second sock today and am about a quarter of the way down the leg.

Pair #2, sock #1; Pair #3 ... oops!

Things have been busy at Chez Quiltingmick. But I allowed myself some time last weekend to get stuck into Pair #2. I'm using the "In your Shoes Ankle Socks" pattern from Crochet Me, and other than a very strange way to do a heel (almost as an afterthought!) I'm extremely happy with how they have turned out. I've done one sock, using Sullivan's Sock Yarn (love the yarn - it's really surprised me with how lovely it is).

Then I allowed myself to get distracted by the most beautiful handdyed wool by the lovely Kattwings at Etsy. It arrived early last week and I have been enamoured by it's rosy hues ever since.

crosshatch socks all hatched!

Crosshatch socks all hatched and ready to sit in present basket. I really enjoyed doing this stitch and will do it again, I think. This is done in Hotsocks sock wool I bought last Saturday at the Spinners and Weavers Open Day. I've actually been quite busy at work all week, but the business has been in spurts. There were times when I could sit and knit and the eight rows of this pattern go quickly. It's from More Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch. I have both these books and think the info contained is great. Lots of variations to suit needles, tension, yarn, size foot etc and lots of useful information about knitting. However, I think I like the second book more than the first. Just personal preference, but I like the stitch patterns more. I have several stitch dictionaries, but don't seem to have most of these stitches.

Wool here is HotSocks knitted on 2.5 mm Brittany Birch needles which I bought from Daphne at the Knittery.

Why the mints tin? I was sitting looking at the empty tin the other day while knitting and thinking there had to be a use for such a tin. Wool and darning needles sprang to mind. Just perfect, and a good, tightfitting snap lid too. Such needles have been rattling around in my container of stitch markers for quite a while. Now they have been transferred.
As can be seen, there was a surprising amount left of the HotSocks wool. The dark chocolate Essential Sock It to Me sock yarn from Elann goes well, so this will be another pair. Possibly for one of the grandchildren. It's my day off today, I work Monday-Thursday but DIL has asked me to do some emergency babysitting this afternoon. That means an hour in the train each way for about three hours child minding till my son arrives home. More knitting time. I'm also minding the other lot tomorrow afternoon and evening while their parents are at a wedding. I doubt I will get much done then.

Size 11!!!!!! They are even too big form my LARGE sock blockers.
I have just cast on my sister's pair - her feet are smaller than mine so they shouldn't take too long.

The feel of handknitted socks!

After two months languishing on needles waiting for the grafting [Kitchener stitch] my Tofutsies socks are finally finished. I wore them on Friday - I didn't like the feel of hand-knitted socks under the soles of my feet. They're knitted in stocking stitch - does anyone have suggestions? It never occurred to me that I wouldn't like hand-knitted socks; I've bought more yarn for at least another three pairs! What can I do?

Here's a start on my crosshatch socks from more Sensational knitted Socks. I bought the wool yesterday at the Spinners and Weavers open Day. It's Hot Socks sock wool (sockewolle). Quite pleasant to use.

The pattern's very easy and quite obvious to follow and I've done four repeats. The sock shown in the book has seven down to the heel with the pattern down the instep. It wouldn't be me if I didn't make some changes. I've done a roll top of ten rows and will probably do a short row heel again. This time however, I'm currently planning on a grafted toe.

Someone else commented on searching for patterns. I have a couple of books with lots of possible variations, some bought patterns and all the resources of the net. I've made up lots of my own with imagination and using a stitch dictionary. I can spend hours searching for a pattern which takes my fancy at any particular moment.

However, this pattern seems to suit the wool. The ball is 100 grams and I'm hoping to have enough left to pair with some dark brown left from the Zokni socks to make a pair for one of the grandchildren. We'll see.

Those bl**dy crocheted socks again

Hello there - friendly neighbourhood crocheter posting!

I've finally done my first ever pair of crocheted socks, but not without distractions. On Tuesday I was a mere 3 inches from the end of the last sock, but what did I do instead? I started the ribbing for a second pair. Mr QM complained rather loudly, stating one of my challenges was to actually complete a pair.

So tonight I did it. Besides, the back loop ribbing on the second pair was driving me barmy and I needed, ironically, a distraction from it.



I used Four Season Grundl Michaela sock yarn, with a 3.5 mm hook. Three balls were used and I had about a metre left of the yarn (LUCKY!) As these are my first ever finished socks and I did butcher a sock pattern beyond belief, I'm more than happy to critique them. I'd make them smaller next time, for sure. The length is fine and the heel is perfect, but the foot and ankle are a little too wide.

Here's the first of the mosaic socks done. The pattern is from More Sensational Knitted Socks.

It's not really a very good photo but it's getting late in the afternoon and I've taken it on an angle. I also thought I had spread out the sock, but I see one part of the pattern appears to be pulled in and gathered. It's the way it's sitting on the leaf. No gathers in real life. The colour is off too. It was more accurate in the photo from last week. It's really a full-on pillarbox red and a very deep royal purple. This looks like a mauve and a pinky red. Not at all.

Now before anybody thinks this was a quick knit, I have a confession to make. I started this in the middle of last week and posted a picture of the first pattern half done. It's an easy pattern but not one I could do at work where I am constantly interrupted and I would make a mistake in the counting for sure. 28 rows in the pattern but every second row is the same as the one before.

I was babysitting grandchildren last Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, so could do none there. I was helping Miss Just Seven untangle her knitting, and Master Just Two is not knitting friendly yet. Just before DIL arrived home from work, we started to tidy up. I turned and stepped without looking and trod on his handcrafted wooden tractor with grader blade. I stumbled because my bare foot hurt so much and fell over as there was absolutely nothing to grab hold of for support. Full length on the loungeroom floor. Some nasty bruises, a good deal of stiffness and a very sore foot where I trod on the thick blade.

So I did nothing yesterday. Just sat and rested with my foot up. So plenty of time for knitting. All day.

A question for you

Late last night I reached the heel of my first sock for SSoS. It is done with short row shaping using double wraps [something I've never encountered before]. After six attempts today, I finally made it to the end of the heel! [the wraps on the purl rows gave me the most grief].

But, now I'm not a happy camper knitter. I have two huge holes where the leg joins the heel, one on either side and one is much worse than the other. How can I stop this from happening? Do I have to frog back to the beginning of the heel and start again? *sigh*

I'm Bringin' Soxy Back!!!

My Mum's The Word sock #1 is going along nicely on the foot. I like symmetry so I arranged the stitches so there were 3 garter stitches at the end of Needle 3, and 3 at the start of Needle 1. This means I have a 'jog' in my garter stitch (Not the kind of jog you do at footy!!) I continued the 6 garter stitches down the heel, and then wondered if I should unravel and 'fix' the jog. I decided I wouldn't, but when I write up the pattern, I will put all the 6 stitches on one needle!!

I have started The Rainbow Socks from Magknits: The Connection Socks. I am using some beautiful ChocMint 4ply from The Knittery. It is a mixture of the Chocolate and Forest colours that Daphne made into a striped ball!!! I am not really a short row knitter, so I am not exactly sure if I am following the directions properly. I wrote out my approximation of what to do, it looks OK, so I am just brazening it out!!! I still have the short row heel to face... :-(
I think I will start one more pair of socks and then I am all set up with a sock for every occasion!!!
