Yes! Summer is here! Well, the Southern Summer of Socks anyway. By the powers vested in me by, oh, me, I declare summer has commenced! Sock knitters unite!
Bells and I have decided that most of the action this year will happen on Ravelry, in the SSoS group - we both participated in the Tour de France KAL this year which ran entirely on Ravelry and it worked really well!
But we know not everyone is necessarily on Ravelry or has a blog, so if you want to post on the SSoS blog that's absolutely fine, we won't be shutting it down or getting rid of anything, as there's lots of good info and sock knitting on here!
We hope you'll join us and have some fun knitting socks together this summer!

Yes, we're back!
So after some procrastination and deep thinking, and some gentle prodding in the Ravelry group, SSoS is back for 2008/2009! Woo hoo!
This year there might be a few less competitions but there might be a swap or two instead if enough people are interested. But hopefully, as with last year, there will be lots of great socks knitted, technique sharing, general learning and socky goodness and fun.
Everyone who participated last year is still in the sidebar and still has posting privileges - I'll leave it that way until the end of October and then will delete anyone who hasn't either (a) posted to the blog or (b) left a comment on this post to say they want to participate or (c) emailed the SSoS email (see sidebar) to say they are in! You can also join the Ravelry group but we encourage you to post to the blog as well (makes it lots more fun!).
New participants also most welcome - see (b) or (c) options above! If you are new, we'll need an email address for you to send you an invitation to enable you to post on the blog.
For the newbies, Southern Summer of Socks is designed simply as a fun, relaxed way to knit through your sock yarn stash. We aim to keep it as straight forward as possible, with minimal rules and guidelines and plenty of time to knit all the socks you can or want to manage in the time. Socks are ideal summer knitting because they're small and easier to deal with in the heat than a huge, heavy jumper. And they make ideal Christmas gifts.
As with last year, SSoS will run for 6 months - starting on 1 October and ending on 30 April 2009, and is open to anyone in the world (not just our southern hemisphere friends!). Sign up or renew now for a summer of socky splendidness!*

We didn't mean to go out with a whimper, honest. Somehow, as it seems to do, life got in the way. Sorry about that! For the last huzzah, we'd like firstly to thank everyone who took part in our inaugural Southern Summer of Socks and in particular those who generously offered and provided prizes:
(check 'em all out! Buy yarn from them!).
We'd also like to thank Amy for her behind the scenes assistance in helping with buttons and general support and niceness. We'd like to thank everyone who entered our competitions, everyone who posted and everyone who responded to questions with tips, tricks and links. And finally we'd like to congratulate everyone who achieved their sock knitting goals and in particular those of you who have now come to be sock knitting lovers!
And we think no-one has demonstrated their dedication to the knitted sock than Crafty Carolyn, who managed to knit 20 pairs of socks this summer - wow! Our very last prize will soon be winging it's way to her in recognition of this achievement (just send us an email with your address, Carolyn!).
We haven't decided whether we'll run SSoS again next summer…but we'll leave the blog up and hope you will drop by from time to time and tell us what socks you are knitting. It's been a lot of fun and we are so thrilled you all joined us!

Socks on Holidays!
Sockers, it's time to announce our next competition! As foreshadowed, this one's about socks on holidays! We'd love to see pics of your socks relaxing on the beach, going to the pub, taking in afternoon tea at the Ritz, making a snow man, skiing down the slopes of Aspen...oh, sorry, that's my holiday I'm dreaming about (well, except for the skiing!)

This one will be decided by popular vote, so get those pictures in! We'll close off entries on Friday 15 February and vote the following week. Depending on number of entries, we might even have different categories (eg most scenic, funniest, most unusual etc)!
Some rules:
1. One photo only per person (although we might allow more depending on number of entries)
2. Send your photo to the SSoS email in sidebar with "Socks on Holiday Entry" in the title (so we don't miss anyone!)
3. Give us your name and blog name in the email as well - just to make it easier to track down the winner!
Feel free to make it as scenic, funny, iconic or whatever you wish!

Christmas (shhhh!) Competition
I know there are some people out there who don't yet want to mention the C word* (that's mainly me, actually!), while there are others who have boasted of almost finishing their C word preparations. I don't know about you, but I feel I've made a big step by casting on a pair of socks for my MIL for C word (lacy mock cables in Colinette Jitterbug - mmm, nice yarn!)
One of the competitions we planned is for the most C word socks - ie most pairs of socks knitted in the SSoS period and gifted this year - this might be a good incentive to those of you slogging your way through a list of gift socks, or those of you who haven't quite started yet!
As this is a numbers competition, there are a couple of guidelines for entries:
This is an honesty thing, so we are relying on you to bear this in mind when submitting your C word sock gifts (and photos! We love photos!).
One of the competitions we planned is for the most C word socks - ie most pairs of socks knitted in the SSoS period and gifted this year - this might be a good incentive to those of you slogging your way through a list of gift socks, or those of you who haven't quite started yet!As this is a numbers competition, there are a couple of guidelines for entries:

-small pairs of socks (babies, kids) count as half a pair

October wrap-up and Competition Announcement!
So October has passed and we've seen some great socks on the blog so far, as well as some sad frogging stories and lots of great lists of challenges. And we've had almost 100 people sign up - weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
One of the reasons we set up SSoS was to share the sock love with our knitting (and crocheting) friends who have yet to knit the humble sock or who have tried but don't yet have a lot of confidence with their sock knitting. So we've decided to have a little special giveaway as an extra incentive for sock newbies.
If you are a sock newbie, leave a comment with your name and blog or send us an email (with sock newbie in the subject line) - we don't want to set a hard and fast rule about what a sock newbie is, we think you know if you are a newbie or not - for me it only took one pair to hook me and after that I wouldn't have called myself a newbie, but for others it might take a few socks before you feel that level of comfort.
Entries close Thursday 8 November and the winner will be drawn randomly from all sock newbie entries on Friday 9 November!

Administrivia
One of our sockers has suggested it would be a good idea, for those of you who have one, to include your blog name in your posts, either at the end, or somewhere through, and preferably make it a hyperlink as well - because our sign-on names and blog names can be quite different, which makes it a bit hard to find out more details about your socks or other knitting.
As we've got over 90 people signed up we thought it was a good idea to help us all get to know each other!

Adding The Button To Your Blog
Hello, Guest Admin Amy here (AKA "The One Who Knows Some HTML"). I'm sure Bells and Rose Red will have an official announcement of Who Won and What She Gets (hmm, I guess they're gonna have to now, huh?), but before I go to bed here on the East Coast of the US, I wanted to help out with adding the new button to your blog. (Congratulations, whoever you are!! I hope you won yummy goodies.)
If you have a blog and want to add the button, you can grab it here. If you blog using Blogger and want to share the copy of the image that's already been loaded onto the Blogger server...you can email me and I'll send you the code (you don't have to, though...you can upload your own copy). However, if you blog using another server, you'll have to right click on the image, save it to your computer, and upload it to your own server. If you want to link the button back to this blog, you need to put the following code before the image code, enclosed in brackets where the asterisks are:
